In zones 3-12, Edamame are easy to grow and this compact bush variety is suitable for most home vegetable gardens. Direct sow these in late spring once your temperatures stay in the 70’s. Work your garden soil 6″ deep and sow two seeds side by side, 1″ deep and 24″ apart. Once your seedlings are 1″ tall thin to the strongest plant.

A quick word on Edamame and nitrogen. Like other beans Edamame consumes large quantities of nitrogen as they produce the beans. One way to provide a sufficient amount is to inoculate your soil when you sow the seed, or you can amend your soil every 30 days with a nitrogen heavy compost mixture. Insufficient amounts of nitrogen will hinder the pod production.
